We're excited to announce the launch of the AllNewsAPI MCP Server – a Model Context Protocol integration that brings real-time news data directly to your AI assistants and development tools.

What is MCP?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that enables AI assistants to securely connect to external data sources and tools. Think of it as a universal adapter that lets your AI assistant access real-world information beyond its training data.

With MCP, your AI can:

  • Access real-time data from APIs
  • Execute tools and functions
  • Retrieve context-specific information
  • Provide more accurate, up-to-date responses

Why We Built This

Developers using AI assistants like Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code (GitHub Copilot), and Windsurf often need access to current news data for:

  • Research and analysis - Understanding current events and trends
  • Content creation - Writing articles with up-to-date information
  • Market intelligence - Tracking industry news and competitor activity
  • Application development - Building news-powered features with AI assistance
  • Data journalism - Analyzing news patterns and sentiment

Previously, you'd need to manually search for news, copy-paste articles, or write custom integrations. Now, your AI assistant can access AllNewsAPI directly through natural language queries.

Key Features

Access news articles with advanced filtering:

  • Date ranges - From the last hour to 10 years of historical data
  • Languages - 22 languages including English, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, and more
  • Countries - 244 countries worldwide
  • Regions - africa, americas, antarctic, asia, europe, and oceania
  • Categories - technology, business, sports, entertainment, health, science, and more
  • Keywords - Search for specific topics, companies, or events
  • AI filters - Filter by sentiment or named entities analyzed from each article

  • Proper rate limit management

Getting Started

Setting up the AllNewsAPI MCP server takes just a few minutes. You'll need an AllNewsAPI key (get one free at allnewsapi.com) and any MCP-compatible client — Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, and more.

There are two ways to connect: our hosted server (nothing to install) or running it locally with npx.

Point your client at our hosted endpoint and pass your API key. Nothing to install or maintain:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "allnewsapi": {
      "type": "remote",
      "url": "https://mcp.allnewsapi.com/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "X-API-Key": "YOUR_API_KEY_HERE"
      }
    }
  }
}

Prefer a URL-only setup? Pass your key as a query parameter instead of a header:

https://mcp.allnewsapi.com/mcp?apikey=YOUR_API_KEY_HERE

Option 2: Local (npx)

Run the server on your own machine via npx — no clone or build step needed:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "allnewsapi": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "allnewsapi-mcp@latest",
        "--apikey",
        "YOUR_API_KEY_HERE"
      ]
    }
  }
}

You can also supply the key as an ALLNEWSAPI_KEY environment variable instead of --apikey.

Client-specific setup

Claude Desktop — Edit your config (Settings → Developer → Edit Config) and add the hosted or local snippet above.

Claude Code — Add it from the terminal. Hosted:

claude mcp add --transport http allnewsapi https://mcp.allnewsapi.com/mcp --header "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY_HERE"

Or local:

claude mcp add allnewsapi -- npx allnewsapi-mcp@latest --apikey YOUR_API_KEY_HERE

Cursor — Cursor Settings → MCP → Add new MCP Server. Choose the command type and enter npx allnewsapi-mcp@latest --apikey YOUR_API_KEY_HERE, or add the hosted snippet.

VS Code — Add the server for your GitHub Copilot agent:

code --add-mcp '{"name":"allnewsapi","command":"npx","args":["allnewsapi-mcp@latest","--apikey","YOUR_API_KEY_HERE"]}'

Windsurf — Add the hosted or local snippet to your MCP config.

Any other client — Point it at the hosted URL (https://mcp.allnewsapi.com/mcp) or run the npx allnewsapi-mcp@latest command with your API key.

Example Usage

Once configured, you can ask your AI assistant natural language questions like:

Technology News:

"Get me the latest technology news from the US"

Climate Coverage:

"Find news articles about climate change from European sources"

Business Headlines:

"Show me top business headlines from the past week"

Cryptocurrency Updates:

"Search for cryptocurrency news in English from the last month"

Sports from Multiple Countries:

"Get sports headlines from Canada and Australia"

Sentiment-Aware Search:

"Find positive news about renewable energy"

Entity-Based Search:

"Show me articles mentioning Apple as an organization"

Usage Check:

"Check my API usage and remaining quota"

The AI assistant will use the MCP server to fetch relevant articles and provide you with formatted, up-to-date information.

Real-World Use Cases

1. Content Research

Before:

You: "I need to write an article about AI regulation"
AI: "Based on my training data from 2023..."

After:

You: "Find recent news about AI regulation in the EU"
AI: *Uses MCP to fetch latest articles*
"Here are the most recent developments in EU AI regulation:
1. New AI Act provisions announced last week...
2. Tech companies respond to compliance requirements...
[with actual current data]"

2. Market Intelligence

Track competitor news, industry trends, and market movements in real-time:

Technical Details

The AllNewsAPI MCP server is built with:

  • TypeScript - Type-safe implementation
  • Model Context Protocol SDK - Official MCP implementation
  • ES Modules - Modern JavaScript with top-level await
  • Comprehensive validation - All parameters validated against official API specs

Available Tools

The server exposes three tools:

1. search-news

  • Search for news articles with advanced filtering
  • Parameters: q, lang, country, region, category, startDate/endDate, max, page, sortby, publisher, and more
  • Returns: Formatted list of articles with titles, descriptions, URLs, and metadata

2. headlines

  • Get top headlines, optionally filtered by country, category, and language
  • Parameters: country, category, lang, max
  • Returns: Latest breaking news and top stories

3. usage

  • Check your plan, request limits, and remaining quota
  • No parameters required
  • Returns: Your current usage so your agent can stay aware of how much of your allowance is left

AI-Analyzed Filters

search-news and headlines also accept AI-analyzed filters so your agent can narrow results by meaning, not just keywords:

  • ai_sentiment — overall article sentiment (positive, negative, neutral)
  • ai_entity_name — a named entity in the article (e.g. United Nations)
  • ai_entity_type — entity category (person, organization, location)

Returned articles may also include AI sentiment scores, detected entities, and a short AI summary when available.

Supported Parameters
